Through the Fabric: Three Years of Saying Yes
Through the Fabric is our debut full-length album: twelve songs, three years in the making, and the first record ELITIN has ever made.
We started out curious about what collaboration could look like if we stopped steering it, if we said yes to every idea and followed each one to its end, whether it led somewhere beautiful or into the trash after 100 hours of work. That experiment became this album.
The process was simple, and we never really changed it. Elijah would write an instrumental, sometimes a rough sketch, sometimes fully produced, and send it over, trusting Justin to hear past its limitations. Justin would hit record without listening first, letting whatever story or image surfaced flow straight through. The core of many of these songs was created in that first exchange.
It was the first time Justin had written words and melodies without an instrument in hand. For Elijah, it meant keeping the inner critic caged until much later in a song’s life, and learning to stay in the iteration phase longer than ever before. We never tried to be fast. We tried to be thorough.
Writing, producing and recording never happened in neat phases. They overlapped and fed each other in an almost infinite loop. Our demos were intricate enough that the real work became capturing what we’d thrown together quickly. We re-recorded drums, vocals and strings at a higher level, while many original ambient and melodic layers stayed exactly as first captured. In production, Elijah’s rule was to always push farther than we’d gone before, pulling each song back and forth across the line between chaos and beauty
Some sounds fought us. Synthetic brass got us close, but we wanted something organic, so we set up a live horn session in a local theater. Even then, we pulled in horn samples and manipulated things, blending them with the live performance until we’d built a sound we were happy with. Other sounds arrived by accident. Justin recorded a buzzing noise at his desk as a joke, and Elijah filtered, pitched and mangled it into soundscapes across the record.
Silence was one of the first things we ever talked about. Elijah treats space as an instrument, something to use with intention. Justin does his best not to fill every second of it. Some songs feel direct, others carry stories you’d never guess. Listen to the Whisper is built around a single image: a butterfly in its cocoon, coaxed out by others who have already emerged.
Talented musicians and engineers joined us for individual sessions along the way. But the real collaboration happened between the two of us: challenging each other, trusting each other, and taking each song from seed to flower. When we disagreed, we trusted whoever felt most passionate. When that didn’t settle it, we gave the song time and space.
Through the Fabric is a patient record. It’s dark and introspective, built from fragments and images that leave room for your own interpretation. We’re not here to tell you what to feel, only to make you feel something. Listen start to finish, ideally on a long drive alone at sunset, or an evening walk somewhere you’ve never been.
Along the way, we kept asking ourselves one question: is this level of introspection even worth it? Every time, the answer was a stubborn yes.
We hope it resonates with you as much as it resonates with us.
